News and Events

Through the folks at Earthisland.org who transform street utility boxes in Berkeley and Oakland CA from those hulking gray masses to a myriad of colorful messages commemorating various events, concepts and people, there is now a Bill Graham commemorative box at 17th St. and Broadway in "Uptown Oakland" right near some of the buildings memorialized on the box. From the Oakland Coliseum, to the Henry J Kaiser Auditorium and the beautiful Paramount Theatre, many a wonderful night was had in Oakland over the years; and the Fox Theatre is also included in a nod to the present. BGMF thanks everyone at Earth Island, our own Arlene O for her direction on this project, and the wonderful local artist, Gale Madyun, who was chosen to represent the spirit of Bill Graham in this way.

Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution

in Philly

We are all thrilled that Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution has now officially opened in Philadelphia - the exhibit will remain there, at the National Museum of American Jewish History until January 2017. The museum is right on Independence Mall and they have done us all proud by decking out the entire building for the Exhibit?s four month stay there. There are a number of public programs, panels, films and musical performances that are coming up there in conjunction with the Exhibit also. Much more information at nmajh.org

Members of the Foundation were able to celebrate with the folks at the Museum during the private opening on Wednesday Sept 14th and we were treated to a fanastic performace by Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady from Hot Tuna. Both fellows have of course a long long history with Bill Graham themselves so it was entirely fitting that they were able to join us for this occasion. We thank Jorma and Jack and all of their folks very much for organizing this so that they could be there. Here are are a few of the pictures from the evening for you to check out:

David Graham, Alex Graham, Bonnie MacLean and Bob Greenfield participated in a "Bill Graham Family" panel on Sunday Sept 18th - part of a larger Symposium which included promoters who were themselves influenced by Bill?s work, and a panel on Philadelphia radio

If you are anywhere near Philadelphia or have friends and relatives who will be you can?t go wrong steering them towards the National Museum of Jewish American History over the next few months to see "Bill Graham and The Rock & Roll Revolution".

The Bill Graham Memorial Foundation section At the Oakland A's -Washington Nationals Game Saturday, May 10th, 2014 For "Night On The Green"

We are very pleased to announce that The Bill Graham Memorial Foundation will be the recipient of "Night On The Green" a fundraising event at the Oakland A's - Washington Nationals game at O.co Coliseum, Saturday May 10th - game start time 6:05PM.

Following the game that night, Bay Area favorite sons, Journey, will have their music set to a huge fireworks display. Journey begins a major tour May 15th at the Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, so we'll be helping to send them on their way in style. Journey co-founder and lead guitarist Neal Schon, and keyboardist Jonathan Cain will perform the national anthem at the game, and Jonathan Cain will throw out the first pitch!

Starting in 1973 and lasting well into the early 1990s, Bill Graham presented an extraordinary series of shows at Oakland Stadium, called "Day on the Green" - just a few of the myriad of performers included The Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Led Zeppelin, Peter Frampton, The Beach Boys, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Parliament-Funkadelic, The Who, U2, Bob Dylan, The Police, Metallica, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Journey. These shows continued until shortly after Bill's untimely passing in 1991.

In honor of "Night On the Green", a commemorative T-shirt designed by poster artist Ruben Rude will be available to you either with your seat in the special Bill Graham Memorial Foundation section of the ballpark, or if you already have your tickets to the May 10th game, you'll be able to purchase a T-shirt while you are there. All proceeds from the sale of the commemorative "Night On The Green" T-shirt and a portion of the ticket sales in the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation section will benefit the Foundation.

Special Panel Discussion

In honor of Presenting: Bill Graham and that Bill would have been 80 this year, we have put together a Panel Discussion which will take place,

Sunday June 5th at the Lush Life Gallery/Jazz Heritage Center - 1320-1330 Fillmore St., SF
- the "doors" are at 5:00PM and the panel will start around 5:30PM.

Participants include Bob Barsotti, Mickey Hart, Steve Parish, Jerry Pompili, and Bill Thompson
Between them they have countless years of work and play in the world of music, and hopefully many a tale to tell of their travels. Each of them will also be speaking about their friendship, adventures and encounters with Bill Graham.

The Lush Life Gallery, where Presenting: Bill Graham is mounted is quite small - but we will do out best to accommodate folks on Sunday. A $10 donation which will go to the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation and the Jazz Heritage Center is suggested. No one turned away for lack of funds.

PRESENTING: BILL GRAHAM- a collection of remarkable images with narration in Bill's own words. ( This exhibit is now over)

Hello Everyone,

The Bill Graham Memorial Foundation is really pleased to invite you to see Presenting: Bill Graham - a collection of remarkable images with narration in Bill's own words. The exhibit will be available at the Jazz Heritage Center/Lush Life Gallery, 1320-1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco, until mid July and we sincerely hope you enjoy it.

The Gallery is open Wed. - Sat. from 3PM to 10PM and Sundays from 2PM to 8PM, although we have placed a number of things in the lobby to the Jazz Heritage Center which is open daily from 10AM - 11PM. There's no admission charge.

The exhibit was curated by Bob Greenfield, James Olness, and me, Bonnie Simmons, the Executive Director of the Foundation, and the pleasure was definitely all ours. Enormous thanks go to Bill's sons, David and Alex Graham, who made it possible for us to proceed in a manner Bill himself would have appreciated. And thank you to the Jazz Heritage Center and The Koret Foundation for their generous support. Here are a few pictures from the opening reception for Presenting: Bill Graham -
