![]() Established in 1985, the Alameda County Community Food Bank is the county's
central clearinghouse for donated food. Last year the Food Bank collected
more than 12 million pounds of food donated by producers, distributors,
retailers, growers and individuals. In turn, this food helped the Food
Bank's network of 300 hunger relief agencies, including food pantries,
soup kitchens and children's programs, provide food assistance to more
than 120,000 low-income and working poor individuals each month. In addition to food distribution, the Food Bank educates the community and elected officials about the causes of hunger and poverty while advocating for policies that would improve the lives of low-income people. The Food Bank also operates a toll free Hunger Hotline which provides callers with same-day referrals to local emergency food providers. A nonprofit organization, the Alameda County Community Food Bank is a member of America's Second Harvest, the national food bank network. By performing essential tasks such as food sorting, each year more than 3,500 volunteers help the Alameda County Community Food Bank provide assistance to thousands of people in need.
